Located on the road between the hamlet of Vistale and the village of Piana, the chapel is dedicated to Saint Lucy of Syracuse.
Saint Lucia, martyr born around 283 and died during Diocletian's persecution around 304. Saint Lucia came from a wealthy noble family in Syracuse. According to the records of her martyrdom, she dedicated herself to Christ and decided to give her possessions to the poor.
From this passion, we remember her response to her judge: "You keep the wills of your princes, and I observe night and day the wills of my God.... You wish to please them and I have no other ambition than to please Christ alone. So do what seems useful to you, and I'll do what's useful for the salvation of my soul".
From Syracuse, where she was the object of tender devotion as early as the 4th century, her cult spread throughout the West. Corsica in the Middle Ages dedicated some twenty-nine shrines to her. (from 'Église de Corse en prière' - Diocese of Ajaccio)
The chapel, located on the road between the hamlet of Vistale and the village of Piana, is dedicated to Saint Lucy of Syracuse. It was built in 1906 to replace the former Sainte-Marie church, which was too small.
The Byzantine-style interior, created by Russian artists Anastassya Sokolova and Valery Tchernoritsy between 1992 and 2004, features remarkable scenes depicting the life of Christ.
It is included in the General Inventory of the Cultural Heritage of the Territorial Collectivity of Corsica.
Recently restored, the church is open in July and August.
The painted wooden statue of Saint Anthony Abbot dates from the late 17th century and was commissioned by our confrères at the time.
